2 months agoChris Tootell commented on Flicker (dir: animator from Coraline using a canon rebel and a plank of wood)for this film it was animated by hand. the light streaks: the process for each frame was; open the shutter, run away from the camera with a flashlight on a stick pointing it roughly toward the lens (i was wearing dark clothing so as not to expose), then run back this time pointing the flashlight onto a surface so the light streak would be effecting it's surroundings, each exposure was around 30 seconds.

The puppet was created by a model maker who also worked on Coraline as an armaturist, Jeremy Spake. You are right about the plank of wood. I marked out my camera move and shot 1 30 exposure per frame.

This was for one of the first shots in the movie, the first shot of Coraline when the cat jumps into frame. This timelapse was shot over 2 days and was only the first 70 frames or so of the shot.

I shot it whilst I was animating on Coraline so I was animating this through the nights for about a month or 2, then post took a couple of weeks.

Started animating professionally at 16 for kids TV shows. Have since worked on Tim Burton's Corpse Bride for Warner Bros, for Aardman animations and Coraline for Henry Selick at Laika amongst others. I now have 12 years animation experience.
Written, directed and produced my own shorts and continue to do so, as well as experimenting with visual and practical effects in live action, stop motion and CG.
