What is CalCAN?
The California Climate and Agriculture Network (CalCAN) is a coalition that advances policy solutions at the nexus of climate change and sustainable agriculture.

Why has CalCAN formed?
There is an increasingly urgent scientific, economic and social mandate for agriculture to address climate change with boldness and innovation. In California, climate change is expected to cause prolonged and frequent heat waves, drier conditions, reduced water resources and increased pest and disease pressures. These profound challenges to the viability of California agriculture require action. The vision for California's agricultural future that has long been articulated and modeled by sustainable agriculture provides powerful solutions to the climate crisis.

Who is CalCAN?
CalCAN members have a demonstrated commitment to an economically, ecologically sustainable and socially just food and farming system. Members include representatives from agricultural, environmental, food safety, and other organizations. Active participation in an Issue Area is a requirement of CalCAN membership.

How does CalCAN work?
CalCAN compliments and augments existing sustainable agriculture and environmental policy efforts by providing a coordinated, unified and diverse coalition to address state agriculture policy from a climate protection perspective. We strive to be a voice for the positive contribution agriculture can make on climate protection and adaptation, and to assemble diverse expertise and stakeholders to advance specific state policy proposals.
