Google "mts converter" - there are a few out there. One of my colleagues bought FIVE Canons for his department and was tearing his hair out with the same issue. Luckily, he found a converter that did the trick. However, we are not a Mac shop, so what helped him won't work for you.

We deal with large volume licensing all the time over a range of vendors, including Microsoft and Adobe but not Sony. Microsoft's licensing paradigm specifically states that OEM software is for use by systems builders who transfer the finished product to a third party. Personal use is prohibited. I'd be amazed if any other vendor (e.g., Adobe) intends OEM software to be used for personal purposes.

Ed, speed depends on how your external drive is connected. R U USB (which standard?), FireWire, eSATA or something more exotic? Unless you're using something special, I wouldn't put any data you're actually messing with on the external drive. You're better off using the external drive as an archive only.
