Masha Vasyukova is a writer, director and producer. She was born in 1986 in Kaliningrad, Russia.
Masha has studied Film History and Film Art at the City and Metropolitan University in London, England. During that time, she also worked on a novel and ran the weekly film club at UNIT K5 in the Arena Design Center located in North London. She has a degree in Marketing and Management from Moscow State University of Management.
In 2009 - 2010 Masha resided in Moscow where she's worked as the head of international department of Alexey Uchitel production company "Rock Films". She is an associate producer at Molot Entertainment since 2010 and a founder of her proper production studio Cheesy Cuts Productions. Masha is a curator of special events at the European Union Film Festival in Kaliningrad since 2006.
Following her studies, Masha moved to New York City for an internship in the production department of the New York Film Festival.
Always having been drawn to the allegorical and mystical mythology of the Ancient Greeks, Masha proceeded to delve into the fascinating research of symbolic mythology in the films and artworks of the great French poet Jean Cocteau which took her from NY to Paris. This research later becomes a premises for her first feature documentary film on Jean Cocteau and his "Chef-d'Oeuvre Inconnu" or "Coriolan". The film is currently in production.
Her first documentary short film "Woody Before Allen" is a brave meditation on the past and the future. The film is about a faded away memory of a city named Konigsberg and an attempt to preserve its’ memory by referring to another Konigsberg - Woody Allen. The film has been widely screened in festivals across the world, premiering in 2011 at Woodstock IFF, NY; Raindance IFF, London; and FLICKER FEST, Sydney; it was chosen best short documentary at the 2012 "Emerging filmmaker showcase" of the American Pavilion in Cannes.
"TRI ANGLE" is an experimental short, set in the present day but is rooted in Greek mythology. It is a preformance arts piece, highly inspired by Cocteau and based on a short story by Prosper Merimee.
"Marilyn Diaries" a project initiated by actress Olya Mareva, based on monologues that are derived from Marilyn's intimate diaries first published in 2010. The project is a series of short episodes. Masha directed and filmed two episodes entitles "Mr.Kimmell" and "Tight Sweater".
In the beginning of 2013 Masha starts to shoot "Oedipe Avec Une Barbe Bouclee Comme Celle de Zeus" - a short film inspired by the mythic character of Oedipus, Ovid's "Metamorphoses" and Jean Cocteau's poetry. For this short, in conjunction with Eva Connaughton and Daniel Hernandez Masha also fabricated over-sized masks of mythical animals and various art pieces. (currently in production)
Masha has also collaborated as a cinematographer on several projects of Australian filmmaker Gracie Otto: "Chalky" - a feature documentary on legendary British producer and impresario Michael White, currently in postproduction; and a short film "Hotel du Ministere".
Masha currently resides in Paris and is also working on her first mixed media exposition which includes collages, art objects and video.
