Leonardo Pallenberg was born in Rome in 1982 to a half-German, half-Hungarian family. Raised in a very artistically oriented environment (both parents are pianists, and several close relatives are painters, screenwriters and directors), Leonardo developed a great passion for cinema and Japanese animation. After graduating high school, he attended the European Institute of Design (IED), where he achieved a B.A. degree in Digital & Virtual Design in 2006. During that time, he broadened his knowledge of various artistic aspects such as Graphic Design, Animation, Video Production and Cinema History, and began to display a particular inclination and capability for Videography.
Upon graduation, Leonardo began to collaborate with important companies and associations, both in Italy and around Europe. Of note are Nike, the telephone company Nokia, the TV channel Boing, the German cultural association Goethe-Institut and the top Italian newspaper for sports, Gazzetta dello Sport.
Between 2007 and 2011 Leonardo lived and worked in important cities in Europe such as London, Frankfurt and Rome, always seeking to perfect his technical skills and acquiring knowledge through his collaborations with professionals in the field.
At the end of 2011, certain that it would improve his professional knowledge of photography and lighting, Leonardo moved to New York and attended an intensive Filmmaking course at New York Film Academy (NYFA).
During the months of the course he deeply increased his skills as Cinematographer and Camera Operator by dealing with various challenges regarding both framing and lighting that can occur on a set.
Through his work experience over the past years, and through the notions and concepts gleaned at NYFA and from people he met in the field, Leonardo acquired the expertise to participate in illustrious video projects during the past two years. He shot more than 16 videos in 3 months for important events and magazines regarding Italian culture in America, interning for the company i-Italy; he worked as 1st Assistant Camera and Assistant Editor on several important sets such as the video “Walking” for the Canadian singer Alexz Johnson and the documentary “The Director”, officially selected at the Tribeca Film Festival 2013, produced by James Franco, on the fashion house Gucci and its Creative Director Frida Giannini. He is Cinematographer and 1st Camera Operator for Blitz Entertainment and its popular online show “Date Night with Riccardo”, which aired on Honestcooking and Filmmanex. In addition, he always works with young and talented colleagues from all around the world.
One of the last projects in which Leonardo has been involved as Co-Director and Cinematographer, is a commercial for AT&T, which has been officially selected for the Cannes-Lion Festival of Creativity 2013.
Through his passion for film, his devotion to the field of cinema and his ability as videographer, Leonardo has had the chance to meet internationally known personalities. Worthy of mention among these are Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City NBA star), Oguchi Onyewu (U.S.A. National Team soccer player), Helen Mirren ( Academy Award winner actress), her husband Taylor Hackford (Academy Awards nominated Director), Elisa and Pino Daniele (Top 10 Italian Singers), John Turturro (actor, director and screenwriter) and more.
Currently Leonardo is collaborating as the main Cinematographer for many projects, among them the documentary OFF-Identikit, about Francesca Alinovi. The film will be screened at MAMbo, Museum of Modern Art of Bologna, during the exhibition organized in memory of Ms. Alinovi.
