2 weeks agoMike McKinlay commented on Christmas Shootout: Part 1I love how when you go to the vimeo sites of the biggest nerds with the most technical geeky camera information breakdowns who reply to tests like these... they always seem to personally put out the most boring video content ever. Overcompensation is awesome. Strange how it works that way in every industry.

3 weeks agoMike McKinlay commented on the first iPhone 4 cinematic film. This 'Ongoing revolution of digital film-making techniques' is getting old to me. I feel like we need to step back a bit and just concentrate on the filmmaking itself. All of these 'convenient' cameras (so-called breakthroughs) are just making us all pussies. The creativity hasn't changed much at all considering that the same quality of work has been done since the 70's. Quick and convenient doesn't always produce quality. Hard work and getting back to the craft will give you more substance and satisfaction in the end. I can't see how it's such a great thing to shoot a film on an iphone? Is it really that important? Or is it just a sign the times and our strange devotion to making everything easy. Do we really want owners of iphone 4's plaguing the internet with quick and easy content.

Mike McKinlay was born in North Vancouver, and raised in the interior of the Okanagan. He was connected first to the film world through nature photography, and spent a good part of his spare time in the woods behind the camera shooting the natural world. With a background in skateboard video production, he soon made the switch from photography to filmmaking - spending much of his time documenting wildlife through moving pictures.
As of 2006, Mike is officially in business for himself working as a fulltime cameraman/DP, working under the name 'Mike Mckinlay Productions.' Mike's main focus is documentary, but he also enjoys a variety of different production genres including commercials and sports videos.
