Yes it is. i was using a precision potentiometer(variable resistor) inline. I dont rememebr the value of pot, other crisis going on currently which keeps me away frrm here. My Brother bought a few of these and as u stated enjoys them. he said they would be better if they had variable lighting. I said no problemo, and within 5 minutes of taking apart had this rig. I will look into other means of modifying for permanent usage. I remember seeing where someone has already installed a 3AA battery holder (velcro) on back of light. This is probably setup i will go with as pot takes some room to install.

the internal battery is 3.7V 730mAh lithium ion rechargeable, similar to aslim cellphone batt.

yes very very easy to wire light using external power.
