    That is actually an urban legend.

    The real reason is because Einstein often says things where "god" means the laws of the universe. For example, "I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings." As well as things like "The idea of a personal God is an anthropological concept which I am unable to take seriously."

    So it's easy to use one quote or the other, and claim he was an atheist, deist, pantheist, etc.
