Tony Rowell is the son of renowned photographer and mountaineer Galen Rowell. Tony’s photography expeditions have taken him from the Arctic Circle to the mountains of Tibet. His award-winning photos have appeared in books, calendars and in Astronomy, Backpacker, Nature’s Best Photography and Outdoor Photographer magazines. In 2009 NASA used 3 of Tony's Astro-photos as the Astronomy Picture of the Day on their APOD website. Tony uses Nikon DSLRs exclusively and his work has been exhibited at the Yosemite Museum Gallery in Yosemite Valley, the Marin Headlands Visitor Center at Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and is currently on display at Mountain Light Gallery, Sorensen’s Resort and at the Tioga Pass Resort near Yosemite.
Tony has been hired by film crews and has his videos and stock photos licensed through Mountain Light Pictures for commercials and film projects. Rowell's footage is featured in the epic timelapse film "TimeScapes" and is currently filming his first documentary film "Sierra Starlight".
Rowell is vice president of Mountain Light Photography, and is a
member of the Eastbay Astronomical Society, and serves on the advisory board for the Rowell Fund for Tibet and for the Rowell Legacy Committee for the Rowell Award.
