8mm isn't just memory in society but in art too. So many films use 8mm as a memory device.
I was CRUSHED when I found out about the Polaroids. I've been hoarding them for a while. Sometimes I have more film in my fridge than food!
The conflict between digital and celluloid is interesting as well. I'm glad you've chosen to screen these on monitors. There's something so awkward about watching silent 8mm films on video (or any digital transfer).
A friend of mine referred to it as the "video vacuum". When you project a film, you accept the "silent" nature b/c you hear the projector, but watching a truly silent video transfer is almost painful as there's that electronic buzz in the air that you almost can't hear, but can hear enough of to be slightly annoyed.
It would be interesting if you keep the projector sound in the beginning, then slowly phase it out, and then see the film deteriorate.
I think that could be really powerful. -
