To look for the crescent moon (Hilal) on the 29th day of each lunar month is the Sunnah (practice) of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). To attempt sighting the Hilal by a group of Muslims have been deemed by the Fuqahaa (Jurists) as a communal obligation (Fardh-e-Kifaayah).
The purpose of Islamic Crescent Observation for the UK (ICOUK) is to co-ordinate the Crescent Moon (Hilal) observation attempts in the UK on a regular basis as well as to send out reminders, observation reports and discuss the relevant issues (e.g. the science and/or fiqh of moon sighting). Sometimes, ICOUK members also participate in radio/tv programmes, some of which may be found here! Qamar Uddin (11/2010).
