Seattle-bred and Brooklyn-based composer and instrumentalist Jessica Lurie performs on saxophone, flute, accordion and sings, working with ensembles of every size, as well as theater, dance and multimedia. Her main projects are the Jessica Lurie Ensemble, The Tiptons Sax Quartet, The Living Daylights Trio, La Buya and collaborative live music and painting projects with artist Danijel Zezelj. She is working on honing her skills at making original soundtracks to various short films and hopes to post those adventures soon!
Jessica has performed, toured or recorded with international artists such as Bill Frisell, The Indigo Girls, Vinicio Caposella, Mark Ribot, Marty Erhlich, Wayne Horvitz, Sleater Kinney, Circus Amok, Les Claypool, Nels Cline and Great Small Works. Lurie started her music label Zipa!Music in 2000. She is part of over 30 releases worldwide, and performs and teaches at workshops and music festivals internationally.
With her 2012 CD release (Zipa!Music) MEGAPHONE HEART, Lurie and her Ensemble are poised between creative jazz, rock, folk and avant-garde music, generating a luscious and compelling sea of sound. An adventurous musical spirit shines through ten original compositions, with Lurie’s unmistakable big sound on tenor and alto saxes, flute, and her distinctive voice. Inspired by life in Brooklyn, traveling the world, and her love of American and international melodies and rhythms, this is her strongest collection of songs yet.
Megaphone Heart was voted top ten releases of 2012 by Avant Music News and NYC's The Jazz Session.
“Defying genre borders, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Jessica Lurie satisfies on Megaphone Heart, designing a multilayered sonic structure ... melding lyrical pop, stinging rock, rhythmic Eastern European folk music and improvisation-heavy jazz with a dose of free-wheeling avant-groove-meets-grind. “ - Dan Ouellete, Emusic.com
