This might be a stupid idea, Or it might be a good Idea and you've already done it. But have you tried to contact canon and inform the of the problem and asked them to address it in the next firmware update? I remember once seeing a site where a camera manufacturer (can't remember who, maybe panasonic or canon) Encouraged users to call and list problems they want addressed in future firmware updates. It could be a waste of time but I thought I wouldjust mention it. Cheers.
