try the Eos utility, it depends what you want the software to do. But on my 600d, i connect it to my MacBook Pro via usb and launch the eos utility. This allows me to control the camera and lens remotely, eye drop the white balance point, set custom picture profiles and gives a larger high res preview window.

Crop factor is only an issue if you dwell on it (backwards I know but stay with me on this!). You never really notice the crop factor as you will naturally work around it. My advice would be to get the 550 or 600d body, the EF 70-200 f4L USM (non-IS) and a good prime like the EF 50mm f1.4 or the Zeiss planar 50mm f1.4. If you want a zoom lens, research parfocal lenses. These are lenses that retain their focus as you zoom through their range. Also look for fixed aperture lenses as they won't 'breathe' as you zoom in and out. Good fast glass will always outlast bodies. If you invest in the right glass, you can get very good results. The kit lens is a pile of crap for video. My 70-200 blows it clean out the water!

Don't forget about crop factor as well! A 50mm EF prime, will actually be equivalent to a 80mm focal length on the 600d because of the 1.6x crop factor of the APS-C sensor!

Depends on budget etc. If you are only looking at primes, i would try and get your hands on a Zeiss ZE 50mm prime. I'm saving up for one right now! Bit more expensive at around £420, but totally worth it! Also a 28mm L series Canon prime (although expensive) gives great results! I myself have a 600d with the kit lens and an EF 70-200mm f4 USM L series (non-stabilised). If your serious about shooting video, you need a zoom lens like it! The optics are incredible, It's parfocal, has a decent reach and has incredible depth at the telephoto end. Also, its not too expensive! £520 from Jessops is great for L series glass!
