Forming in a dimly lit Auckland studio in the winter of 2008, The Zoup combine crunchy and powerful guitar melodies, authoritative vocals, signature drum rhythms and touches of ambiance in constructing their alluring spin on alternative rock.
Over the last three years The Zoup have built up some considerable live experience frequenting venues around Auckland and venturing as far as Sydney’s legendary Metro Theater, where they thrived in Australasian band competition "Emergenza" in late 2008 during their first year together. More recently, a national tour of New Zealand saw The Zoup play shows in Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown, Dunedin and Methven to receptive crowds of several hundred people.
The Zoup released their self titled debut EP in September of 2009, demonstrating a penchant for creating songs with sonic and vocal depth with moments of calm and chaos all twisted together in this impressive and unpredictable debut offering, featuring crowd favorites "Control" and "Missing". The EP captured the essence of the band live, which is a tornado of sounds led by a charismatic front man in Jaydn de Graaf.
2010 has seen The Zoup clocking up some serious studio hours in pre-production for their forthcoming second release. Recording is underway with engineer James Wong (Shotgun Alley, Addison, Atlanta Fall), with the first single and video due out mid 2011. December 2010 also saw the band winning the Grand Prize for Rock on international competition site Ourstage.com from thousands of song entries, prize money from which will help fund the debut album.
The seeds of The Zoup were first sown when cousins Jaydn de Graaf (vocals, guitar) and Dave Johnston (drums) spent summer holidays together as kids and decided to one day form a band. After high school Jaydn moved to Auckland and the two began experimenting with music and various lineups in various garages. They soon found their other two members in guitarist Dominic Mauger and bassist Tom Chou and officially formed in April 2008.
Influenced by artists from all spheres The Zoup pay homage in their musical style to Incubus, Lostprophets, Queens of the Stone Age, Saosin, Circa Survive, John Frusciante, the Foo Fighters and many others. Make sure you listen out for their upcoming single "One Shot"; bound to make you stand up and take notice of this band.
