Richard B. Doubleday is an Assistant Professor of Art in the Department of Graphic Design at Louisiana State University’s School of Art. He is a former Senior Lecturer in the Master of Arts in Graphic Design program at Suffolk University and Assistant Professor of Art in the Department of Graphic Design at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts. He instituted a summer graphic design program and taught a course ‘Graphic Design in London’ at Boston University London Academic Centre for over 8 years. He has lectured on graphic design history and led courses and workshops in the United Kingdom, Japan, Mexico, United States, China, and annually at Nanjing Arts Institute. Doubleday has exhibited at many international events and competitions including the International Poster Triennial in Toyama, Japan, the Lahti International Poster Biennial, Lebanese American University in Beirut, and the Contemporary International Poster Retrospective in Beijing, China.
His awards and honors include a visiting fellowship at Chelsea College of Art & Design, University of the Arts London, four Boston University Grants for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarship (GUTS), and a Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation Fellowship. Doubleday’s work has been published in numerous periodicals and publications, including Star Graphic Designers: The Masters of Graphic Design (Loft Publications, Barcelona 2012), 1 & 2 Colors (Harper Collins, New York 2011), The Poster: 1,000 Posters from Toulouse-Lautrec to Sagmeister (Abrams, New York 2010), and The Sourcebook of Contemporary Graphic Design (Harper Collins, New York 2009).
His writings on design history have been published in Baseline, IDEA, A! DISEÑO, Print, NOVUM, Design & Packaging China, IdN, Zhuangshi, and Australian Creative and has written extensively on the typographer, book designer, and writer Jan Tschichold. He is a contributing author for Phaidon Archive of Graphic Design (Phaidon Press, London 2012), Meggs’ History of Graphic Design (John Wiley & Sons, Hoboken 2011), and TypoGraphics: Hideki Nakajima (Seibundo Shinkosha, Tokyo 2008). Richard was a guest juror at the Tokyo Type Directors Club Annual Awards and a contributing writer for the Tokyo TDC Vol. 20: The Best in International Typography & Design (Transart, Tokyo 2009). He is principal of Richard B. Doubleday Design, and elected in 2008 to The Society of Printers.
He is an award-winning designer and has exhibited his poster designs at many international events and competitions including the Lahti International Poster Biennial in Lahti, Finland, the Seventh International Poster Triennial in Toyama, Japan, and the Contemporary International Poster Retrospective in Beijing, China. Richard is a prolific international educator, having taught workshops and lectures on design history in Boston, London, Suzhou, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Beijing and Nanjing. Presently, Richard is curating an international poster exhibition titled, A Century of Posters.

Richard was recently a guest juror at the Tokyo Type Directors Club Annual Awards and a contributing writer for the Tokyo TDC Vol. 20: The Best in International Typography & Design (Transart, Tokyo 2009). He is principal of Richard B. Doubleday Design, and elected in 2008 to The Society of Printers.
