Lisa Birke is a Canadian artist working primarily in painting, installation and performance art. Since graduating from Emily Carr University (BFA 1999), Lisa has shown her work in exhibitions across Canada, in the US, and in the Netherlands. She is currently a candidate in the MFA Program at the University of Waterloo. Using black humour as a backdrop, her work makes reference to an eclectic mix of mass media, art historical sources and kitsch imagery. It makes observations about consumerism, the environment, biological manipulation, social and sexual stereotypes, and how technology is changing identity and meaning in the contemporary world.
