3 days agoHe commented on I'm torn on buying the New Canon HF10 or the HV20?? HELP PLEASE"Most important thing about the HV20 (and any camcorder-sized camera): forget about the internal mic - the tape noise is horrible. get a good external microphone, a boom and someone to hold all that suff, and you're set." This is what I'm talking about & where the lines get skewed regarding this cam. The HV20 is a consumer product. Most average joe's aren't gonna have the means to have a mic setup like that, nor should they have to in order just to get any kind of just decent audio from their cam. Yes, all internal mics suck, but not to this degree. The tape noise is horrendous. This is why I recommend that average consumers stay away from the HV20. Sure, its an amazing camera, but unless you're prepared to go the distance with those add-ons, its gonna disappoint. Most consumers want no fuss no muss. The HV20 isn't that.

7 days agoHe commented on I'm torn on buying the New Canon HF10 or the HV20?? HELP PLEASEOK, I'm gonna be straight up with you & will tell you what no one here is letting on about too much. I will have to say no to the HV20. Yes, it produces an AMAZING picture. However, I've had it for about a month now & the onboard mic is absolutely terrible. It's not that the mic itself is any worse than any other consumer built-in mic, but the thing picks up the tape motor noise like nobodies business. Also the zoom motor as well. I mean its LOUD when you get your footage off the cam & play it back in post. So, unless you're prepared to do some audio work on every piece of footage you edit in post or are planning on buying an elaborate (and expensive) external mic setup on a mount thats positioned far away from the camera (no the hot-shoe external mic isn't good enough), I'd get the HF10, which is what I'm doing when I sell this HV20. But, dont take my word for it. Scour the reviews & forums about it. It's a serious issue that many people look over since the cam produces such great video. The problem you'll find is that a lot of prosumers buy this cam & rave about it because it's so cheap, but prodcues great picture & has some nice bonuses. But they already have intentions of outfitting the camera with accessories anyway (namely a big honking mic setup), so the tape noise is no big deal to them. To a regular consumer, which is who this cam is made for, it is. So again, its all about how you intend to use it.

I didn't know they appointed you an official staff member. I just find it interesting everyone is being so vague about why the vid I posted won't work for them. I also find it interesting that Vimeo staffers lock & completely delete threads with this sort of topic on a whim. You'd think they would leave it up for all to see & would appreciate valuable feedback from their users, as I would think it's like gold to them as most sites would kill for that sorta stuff. Deleting topics like that says (to me anyways) "Thanks, but this is how it is. Deal with it or piss off." Which is fine, no one is paying for the service here, but when they do, I believe you'll have to re-examine things like that & not be so blatant in your actions. And I've also seen a few replies from staffers here & there that were just plain short (and sometimes a bit rude) to people for no reason, but we wont go into that. But you guys have all seen it. It's a bit of a put off. Anyways, I'll be good. I wont rock the boat or offer anymore of my time or suggestions to try & improve the experience here. Also, please feel free to lock and/or delete this entire thread from existence. It wont hurt my feelings, but just know that I'm trying to help or else I wouldn't even bother typing these things out. Cheers.

What size are the vids that you are trying to play?? Because my older Macs play them just fine, both in Windows & OS X. Its not the HD versions because the screen res of my older machines cant show all the pixels, so it automatically serves up the "Mid-HD" version (960x540). Im not saying force 1280x720 at 30fps onto everyone whether their hardware can handle it or not. That would be a good way to piss everyone off. Im saying come up with an elegant or automatic way for users who DO have the means to display these vids smoothly to be able to do so in HD, and also make it to where those who don't have the means to play them smoothly get served up a lower quality/res version, all the while leaving the frame rate intact for both versions. I mean, why make it to where the video quality is outstanding for everyone but the frame rate is too jerky to enjoy the movie?? Because thats not good for anyone. This is just my opinion, but I would leave the native frame rate intact at all costs because like I said, it's nearly impossible to take a native 30fps video, turn it into 24fps & make it look natural. Can't be done & the video ends up looking "broken" because of it.

28 days agoHe commented on iMovie '08 desaturating AVCHD video? For the life of me I cant understand why Apple still uses AIC for everything, even their higher end FCE software. I can understand why they do it with AVCHD, but basic native HDV isnt that hard to do these days & it sure takes up a hell of a lot less space. They could at least give you a choice as long as your hardware can handle it. Even FCP does something funky with the raw m2t files from HDV & gives them an mov wrapper. Its enough to make me wanna go with Premiere Pro CS3. Doesn't it do native HDV editing on Mac??
