I was under the impression that every video is already converted upon upload and the original uploaded source file is also stored and made available for download. From reading that BLOG post I didnt really gather that they were changing anything with the players as every single video that plays in the player is already converted.

I guess I gather that from the fact that upon upload we have to wait an additional period for the video to be converted by Vimeo to a format that can be utilized by the player. I did not think they used the source file as the video that is actually played...

I could be wrong but I dont think the quality of the players videos will change at all, I think that only the original source files are no longer be stored on a long term basis. I honestly dont mind not having original source file available anyhow as I was contemplating removing them due to piracy (people claiming them as theirs). But if the quality changes that will be something to make me consider upgrading my account.

Evan Schaible commented on New source file policy

Hey Guys, I am a long standing free user, and I definitely understand this move, and I totally agree with it. I am a visual effects artist and I have all of my 50 or so tutorials hosted here freely, for which I thank you as you have made my life much much easier, as well as the lives of those who watch them. I did have one concern however regarding a comment I received on my latest tutorial. The person expressed a concern that my tutorials would be rendered useless due to this policy change. I was under the impression that only original source files would be effected, and not the converted videos that the player utilizes. So my question is will the free users videos drop in quality and usability, or does this change only effect that downloadable source files? If this change will render my tutorials useless I will indeed be forced to upgrade as I get thousands of views every week and need the existing videos to remain active and in their current quality (which is tremendous). Thanks, Evan

I think they stated in the Blog that they were only not hosting original source files any longer and removing all original uploaded files so that they will no longer be available to download. As far as I read there will be no change to the actual player videos as those are converted upon upload no matter what anyhow.

Could you give me a link to the announcement that you are referring too? Thank you for the heads up, and I will look for your link.
