Rap artist VNova was born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York. In his teens he and his family moved to…the East New York section of Brooklyn.
VNova grew up listening to a wide variety of musical genres like hip-hop, reggae and rock.
“I’ve been into music since I was a young boy,” he explains. “Growing up I was exposed to all types of genres of music, from reggae to rock." The variety of music he was exposed to vastly influenced his writing style. His musical views are broad and this makes the possibilities endless for his writing.
VNova has been writing music since he was a boy. He released his first single, “Peeps in the ground…” in 1997, through a Japanese distribution company.
Stylistically, he considers his art “conscious rap with a street edge.” Other lyrical artists who came before him inspired this approach. “I like to listen to thought-provoking music, so that's mainly the type of music I make. Although I'm good at making ‘ratchet’ music as well,” he admits, “my life experiences and ability to express them allow me to take lyrical to a whole new level.”
Listening to his music, one gets a strong sense of the music of the New York scene. He has a firm grip on hip-hop—a fine blend of rap and the hip-hop beat structure. His youth, culture and rap roots come across vividly in his lyrics.
“I make music to ultimately spark people’s minds.”
VNova continues to build a brand through his music and keeps adding to his volume of work while maintaining creative control of his craft. His ultimate goal is to push the genre further, adding to the meaning and message of hip-hop.
VNova is part of the rap duo BOE & Villa. The two produced their first LP, 1019 Ex Prez, in 1999. His first solo project, Radio Advanced Poetry, was released in 2007.
He has worked with a reputable list of artists, such as Eric Sermon, Midi Mafia, Ron "Neff-U" Feemster, Marc G (Levert), Denaun Porter (D-12), DR Period, Wyclef, Needlz and Mario Winnans. He has also worked and recorded with Monifa, Rakim, Akeneli, Canibus, Fabolous, EPMD and Papoose. VNova has worked with DJs such as Funkmaster Flex, DJ Enuff and DJ Self. He has worked with producers Sean Don, Frequency and East.
VNova’s talents are many and varied, and he reaches the public through many different media outlets.
His latest work, a mix tape entitled Hidden in Plain Sight, is hosted by DJ Diggz and DJ Lust. He is also currently working on an LP, Hidden in Plain Sight V.2. (or simply, HIPS 2). His hope is the complete Hidden in Plain Sight will expand to three volumes.
Another endeavor that is coming to fruition is working with a jazz band to record an “as yet to be titled” EP. In the near future he will be releasing HIPS 2. The day of the release will be “a great day for hip-hop,” he promises.
