iPhone/Filmic Pro/FCPX test footage
Capture footage using iPhone 5 and Filmic Pro 2 and edit using FCPX and determine if footage is suitable for use in my public television series, "Notes from the Field." I have a very small budget and wish to travel light -- both in terms of gear and crew. Also, I produce this Emmy-nomited series in my spare time, so having gear on me at all times and at the ready is important.
Footage Capture: Filmic Pro 2 app set at 30 fps, 50 mbit/sec, 1080p.
Stabilization: Used two tripods for most of the shots Manfrotto 055XB and fluid head and inexpensive 12"-42" telescopic. For slider shots used Glide Gear 23.5" slider mounted on Manfrotto head and tripod.
Audio: For open and closing footage where field audio was critical, used Zoom HN4 and the on-board mic.
Editing: FCPX set at Pro Res 422 codec; also used FCPeffects Advanced Masking Tool 2 plugin to control depth of field.
Stabilization gear is needed at all times; only the smallest and slowest of moves (pans, slides, tilts) is recommended in order to minimize rolling shutter.
Setting focus can be very difficult (again, traveling light so I'm not using an external monitor). I shot the same scene multiple times, first setting focus and then exposure with each shot -- and still ended up deleting a handful of out of focus shots.
