Black Diamond’s Big LePowSki ski and snowboard event at Brighton, Utah was a star-studded event held under the blue skies of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. The event kicked off this year with a Backcountry Film Festival raising more than $1000 for the Winter Wildlands Alliance. The film festival featured films from Powderwhores, SweetGrass Productions and TGR.
The heart of The Big LePowSki is centered on getting people out skiing and snowboarding, learning new skills and techniques from pro skiers and riders. Black Diamond, Arc’teryx and Backcountry.com pooled together some of the skiing and snowboarding’s top athletes to provide instructional clinics to snow sliders eager to learn. This year’s clinics ranged from Park Tricks with Cody Barnhill, Julian Carr and Jen Hudak to a Steeps Clinic taught by Andrew McLean, Jonaven Moore and Mark Welgos. Laura Ogden, Lynn Kennen and Kim Havell teamed up to offer a Women’s Beginner Freeride Clinic. All-in-all, the 80 participants enjoyed a sunny day of skiing and riding while learning all the tricks from the pros.
The Big LePowSki came to an end Saturday evening with a blow-out party combined with the Ski Salt Lake Shoot Out photography contest. The night opened with an acoustic set from a local Salt Lake band Herban Empire. That was followed by a slideshow produced by the Salt Lake Shoot Out contestants, which ended with the awards ceremony and the “crowd’s choice” of Best in Show, awarded to photographer Kevin Winzeler. The night closed down with a raffle and silent auction to benefit the Billy Poole Foundation, an organization that focuses on getting underprivileged kids out on the ski hill. The total raised for The Billy Poole Fund was $2,500.
