Somewhere in the region of 80% of Orchards have disappeared in the last century in England, many rare varieties have been lost.
Orchards are very rich habitats for all kinds of creatures, birds and insects. Two years ago nearly 500 rare Apple, Pear and Quince trees were planted. Every year the trees have to be pruned carefully. Pruning is a work of art and each tree develops its own character and shape. You have to carefully cut the branch at an outward sloping angle above and away from the leaf bud. Pruning trees releases a hormone called Auxin which stimulates growth. Throughout the year like birth through to death the trees come alive, bear fruit and then lose their leaves and then dormant. Pruning is not physically easy as the cold rises through your feet, bites your finger and nose as the wind chill severely blows. Hope you like it. Music DevD.
