Playing the Other is a character selection screen for a fictional computer game. The player is presented with a choice of avatar that constantly shifts between ethnicity, gender, and age.
The CGI character is created using the artist’s face as a starting-point to apply various appearance modifiers.
The work explores tensions inherent between embodiment, representation, and agency in the adoption of diverse virtual identities by a predominantly male, white game audience.
It also problematizes the artist’s own efforts to engage in identity politics from a position of privilege.
