These are some scenes I animated for a documentary called "From the Waste Up" about plastic pollution. The documentary follows 6 families as they try to live for one year with out consuming plastic products.
Plastic poses a serious threat to the health of our planet, including human health. For example, in the ocean plastic will be broken down by sun, wind, and waves into smaller and smaller bits (but never go away). Plastic in the ocean acts like a magnet for pollution, becoming poison pellets of DDT, PCBs and the like. These pieces are ingested by wildlife, many of which suffer and die as a result of our disposable ways. The smallest of the small- the bottom of the food web are eating them too and guess who’s at the top? Next time you dine on seafood, think on that. Not to mention the direct leaching of plastic chemicals into our food and water. Or take a toy made of hormone-disrupting chemicals. Or maybe a shower curtain off-gassing noxious chemicals into your morning routine. The list goes on.
We use it everyday. It´s around us, on us, in us, yet the average person knows very little about this material that defines our age. Furthermore, most people have no idea what it would take to live life without plastic, and why it would be worth it to try.
