Every spring, morel mushrooms pop out for a few glorious weeks. In southwestern Wisconsin, this too-short period usually coincides with Mother's Day (rather convenient for a decadent dinner), though some years we've found them in late April, and this year the north-facing slopes on our property didn't produce anything until the last two weeks of May. Each time we head into the woods armed with tiny knives, socks pulled over pants to thwart enemy deer ticks, we feel the thrill of the hunt and hope to return home victorious. Just add butter, salt, and pepper.
