These animated structures use a variation on the simulation algorithm used in my previous Cellular Forms work (vimeo.com/93056665).
In these examples nutrient for cell growth is created by light hitting cells. By restricting the light to come from above we naturally get plantlike structures, including effects such as bifurcations of the structure into separate branches. Since the only interactions are between immediately adjacent cells, this is a genuinely emergent behaviour of the system.
Some of these forms appear in the last section of the video I made for Max Cooper (vimeo.com/98435385), but also there are also some more recent and bizarre grown creations.
