In August of 1864, General Judson Kilpatrick was ordered by General Sherman to break up the rail lines south of Atlanta to hasten the capture of the southern city and end the war. Kilpatrick failed to do so but the mission brought him and his cavalry army of 4000 through Henry County and right into the county seat of McDonough where he left chaos and destruction in his wake.
