7-22-14 This week we continued our verse by verse walk through the entire epistle of Romans. This twentieth session we began looking at chapter 7, looking at verses 1 through 5. In this session we are looking specifically at the issues of marriage, divorce, and divorce and remarriage as they relate to the relationship believers have with the law. Paul gives a great illustration for the Jewish believers in Rome who insisted that the Gentile believers must yet adhere to many aspects of the Mosaic law. In his illustration, Paul appeals to the clear understanding of marriage that the Hebrew believers would have had, so to understand this passage, one must understand these issues as they did. In a time in history when so many Christians claim to be defending "traditional" (biblical, Judeo-Christian) marriage, it is amazing how little most even know about this issue as it is represented in the Old Testament law and teachings of Jesus and His apostles.
