Childhood obesity rates tripled over the past four decades, with one out of three children in Alaska overweight
or obese. Today's youth are faced with chronic conditions previously not seen in children, such as type 2
diabetes. Excess weight in childhood is also associated with high blood pressure and cholesterol--both risk
factors for heart disease--and other conditions like asthma, joint problems and low self-esteem
