Cities evolve and change due to shifting societal values, and desires, government actions, and market forces. In urban areas, the past coexists and informs the present. This work is an unsentimental look at past and present Washington, D.C.
I originally I created still photo-collages. Subsequently I animated several pieces. This video is based on a still photo-collage commissioned by JBG, an investment management firm and developer.I am interested in how information is conveyed differently in still images compared to videos. In the still versions, viewers contemplate these dense layered images at their leisure. More information and connections become visible the longer one contemplates the still image. In the videos, time is literally and symbolically passing. The viewing time is controlled, even if watching the video many times tends to afford the viewer a richer understanding. The videos vary in length from two to four minutes.
While this project is specific to Washington, D.C., it is emblematic of changes to many cities throughout the United States.
