The video, “Absence. Heart. Fonder.”, explores the compression of physical distance, through exchanged photographs sent between the artist’s parents, during two tours of duty by the artist’s father (pilot service in the Arctic in 1962 patrolling for Soviet submarines, as well as a second tour in Vietnam on board an aircraft carrier as a ship’s navigator in 1966). The audio is taken from tapes also exchanged between the artist’s parents and is of a highly personal nature to the degree that the artist has refused to listen to them, except for a several second interval when he initially digitized the original 3.5 inch reel-to-reel tapes. For this video, the audio was scrambled, overlaid, and modified so that the private content remains inaccessible to the viewer; access to this portion of the archive remains forbidden while at the same time is allowed to exist as creative material for artistic use.
