From July 13 - 20th I was the Philmont Scout Ranch Visiting Forester. This video is a series of short video clips and time lapses taken at Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico over the course of my service week. Each week during the summer backpacking season Philmont has one or two Visiting Foresters that provide program for crews hiking through the Philmont Demonstration Forest (located between Clarks Fork and Hunting Lodge overlooking the Cito Reservoir and Cathedral Rock). During my week I interacted with over 900 individuals, many of which stuck around for a 30 minute program on ponderosa pine forest and fire ecology. Scouts, Scouters, and staff learned about the important role of fire in maintaining northern New Mexico ponderosa pine forests as well as the reasons for and implications of a century of fire exclusion in many of those mid-elevation forests. It was a tremendously rewarding week and a wonderful opportunity to return to a place that is so very special to me.
