Our Year 6/7 theme this year is "we will light the way". We have looked at people who have done this, in particular an 18 year old girl from Sao Paulo called Maristely, who grew up in a favela (slum) in Brazil. Some of those favelas were demolished to make stadiums for the World Cup this year. Even though Maristely was quite young, she worked with Caritas and other charity agencies to help improve conditions for her people. We have told her story in an animation we made. In this filmclip we have used candles, lanterns, street lights and sunsets as symbols of hope, opportunity, compassion and social justice. The Year 6/7s are being encouraged to light the way for others, to get excited about leadership and making a positive difference in the world. We have looked at needing to stay focused even when things look dark and hopeless, and realizing that mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow stronger. We want to spread the light, to proactively work for justice and freedom, and to be a voice for the voiceless. We all fall down sometimes, it's how we get up that matters!
