Middle and Upper School Accompanist Lloyd Arriola performed a piano recital for the Upper School students at a special assembly on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.
Lloyd, who began playing the piano in grade school, earned his bachelor’s degree in piano performance from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and went on to earn his master’s degree and PhD from the Julliard School.
Lloyd first showed the students how the piano can be used in a variety of ways, from impressing friends with an easy song to creating a famous cartoon theme song. He also discussed how the piano helped him channel his frustrations with an academically challenging school into something positive while he was growing up. He performed pieces by Mozart and Gershwin but truly impressed the students with a piece of his own, titled “Concert Piece,” which he wrote at the age of 14.
