Olga’s always surprised by the different reactions people have to the artworks she makes from human hair.
“People are quite happy to touch their hair, run their hands through their lovers hair, play with their children’s hair but they’re not happy to pick it up off the ground when it’s been cut.”
Even her family are a little reluctant. Her daughter won’t touch them. Her father thinks they’re just dust collectors.
But for Olga, hair is the perfect medium. It’s imbued with meaning before it even becomes part of an artwork.
You can tell a lot about a person from their hair. If the hair is grey we know it’s from an older person. Young hair is soft and shiny. African hair is often fine and brittle. And you can often tell if someone has dyed their hair or styled it to fit into a particular group.
A person’s hair embodies part of their identity. So when a person cuts their hair – it becomes a remnant of that.
Olga takes the hair we discard and through a process of weaving, stitching and arranging into a pattern – she hopes to create something that is once again desirable. And something that reflects a little about who we are.
