Downscaling QHD to HD is supposed to look amazing and the examples I have seen on-line are great but when I went to do this myself in Final Cut Pro X, I found the footage looked unexpectedly soft. I wrote a small program that did a simple rescaling of the image by averaging the 4 pixels in QHD that would become a single pixel in HD. The result is significantly sharper and in line with my original expectations. First half of movie is downscaled in FCPX, second half is downscaled with my simple code. (Yes this is a boring shot, a crappy grade and a bit noisy... early tests with the GH4 and grading...)
