“The World is Spinning (and so are we)” was the fourth collection to emerge from a project focused on generating short small group works woven from differently-composed blends of set and improvised dancing. But while the three previous collections manifested as groupings of distinct dances, this one unfolded as a 52-minute continuum filled with many pieces, some lasting only seconds and others several minutes in length. The audience was seated in the center of a wonderful old SoHo gallery space while the action progressed in, through, and above a circular area around them, alluding to how we sometimes encounter people, events, and phenomena in our daily lives.
Here you’ll see an approximately 5 minute long excerpt.
Choreography by David Appel, with the other dancers (Ellen Smith Ahern, Jenni Hong, Hannah Seidel, and Darla Stanley)
