I think that most (if not all) people want to be God (or at least their interpretation of what they believe God should be), and even more so when said people are emotionally and intellectually weak closeted shut-ins.
They might seek isolation in the shadows, and shun any attempts at interpersonal interactions, choosing to live in a world of fantasy where agencies are easily defined as heroes or villains, and in either case the players must resort to grandiose acts of bravery...or sink to the furthest depths of depravity and horror.
Addicted to pop-culture memes and subculture tropes, these misanthropic hermits struggle to gain the validation and affirmation that they have alienated themselves from, as they have thoroughly rejected status quot interpersonal feedback.
The self-imposed isolation leaves plenty of room for thoughts that give rise to Gods and Daemons and heroes and villains and saviors and destroyers who must establish their will through an act of absolution.
And what goal can be greater, than the ending of all that exists?
