Hawaii B-cycle, a pilot bikeshare program, was launched in Kailua, Hawaii in 2011 with two stations and 12 bikes. Bikeshare programs have alleviated traffic congestion and improved public health in many cities in Europe, and they are being deployed in Denver, Portland, Minneapolis, Washington D.C. and many other major cities, most of which do no benefit from the favorable year-round weather that Hawaii offers. The current goal for bikeshare in Kailua is to became a more efficient resource for residents by expanding the number of stations in strategic destination points and to integrate with a state-wide system to be launched in the near future.
