Mike Munoz was drafted in the 3rd round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1986 out of Cal Poly Pumona, where he earned 1st Team All American honors. He made his major league debut in 1989 with the Dodgers. Mike’s big league career spanned from1989 to 2000 with the Dodgers, Detroit Tigers, Colorado Rockies, and the Texas Rangers. While with the Dodgers he was coached by his baseball hero, Sandy Koufax. This coach was a special influence in Mike’s life, both in baseball and out. Sandy Koufax taught him how to train and live “Above the Game,” a motto which Munoz now uses as both the name and the inspiration for his company, which provides professional pitching instruction for young athletes. Above the Game
Through his company and with the game of baseball as his passion, Mike gives back to the game by encouraging the youth of today to be leaders of tomorrow—taking action to improve themselves and those around them. Mike said, “in sports, as in life, victories are won as a team, but teams are held together by leaders with vision, the will to act and the ability to inspire.”
In July 2014 Mike came to speak to our Celebrate Recovery Meeting at Skillman Church of Christ. In this interview by CR Minister Chuck Adair, Mike shared his Christian perspective, some of the influences in his life, and spoke of the triumphs and failures that everyone must expect. Thanks Mike, for your message of inspiration and encouragement.
