Ribbon of Error
mixed media (prints on paper, board, TV, mike with a stand, sound recorder, DSLR camera, tripod, musician, performance and installation)
‘Ribbon of Error’ is a project to compose and perform a piece of music originating from random chaotic ink dots produced by a broken printer. The printer somehow reproduced numerous ink drops in the process of printing an empty document. Its chaotic dots reminded me of the night sky which also seems to be random, however, the universe has its system.
A blank sheet of music paper was overlapped on random dots, which were printed from a broken printer. The random distribution of dots, which normally cannot be translated into a systematic world, are overlayed with a traditional music score structure. Thus the resulting organization of random marks can be performed by a violinist.
