I joined good friends Inger Hogstrom and Jennifer Kucich for a whale watching adventure in Moss Landing, CA. We saw a lot of humpback whales, and almost every behavior they have to display, save lunge feeding. As many whales as there were, there were far more California sea lions. Based on the populations I've seen at Pier 39 in San Francisco and elsewhere, I had no idea there were or could be that many sea lions. Amazing. And, of course, the presence of so many top-level feeders implies record numbers of anchovies below the surface.
This video is best experienced as large as possible in HD (1080p is best) to get the most of the whales. 7:45 is a bit long for this kind of video, but it well conveys what it was like to be on the boat for four hours...without having to be on the boat for four hours. :-)
