Gathered on a sunny hill in San Diego stand a group of people with wings occluding the irrelevant world beyond them as they prepare to launch themselves out over the Pacific Ocean. There’s Billy, who lives in an R.V at the glider port so he can fly everyday, Milly who switched her mountain board for gliding after breaking her back, and Max, who is considering another world record attempt.
But it isn’t just this group from San Diego who have built their life around flying. Flight is an ever present component of human history, folklore, science and dreams; from the mythical Icarus to the revolutionary Wright Brothers and beyond. Fascination with flight is felt by us all, despite it being beyond our natural physical means. It is this beautiful contradiction which we will aim to explore, investigating what flight means to us as a species whilst considering it through intimate narratives of the winged wanderers of San Diego. Aside from them, we will also considering pilots, psychologists and historians to broaden the picture. In this way, we tell the story of particular men and women, but also our fascination with flight as a species.
Paragliding is a very niche sport, but one with very committed and proactive individuals, ready to be engaged. As of yet, there has not been a stand-out film made about paragliding. Our aim is to make the very first and to make something which every paraglider can point to and say ‘that’s me and that’s why I do it’ but also to make something which works as a standalone film, capable of interesting wider audiences because it is about our species-wide interest in flight. We will achieve this by shooting beautifully and speaking informatively.
