Most beekeepers keep bees because they love to have an interesting colony of social insects, with honey as a very welcome by-product. Other are all about the honey. I'm in the first camp, in fact a massive harvest of honey takes a very long time to extract and jar up, and selling it takes time too (finding people to buy it or manning stalls). I'm lucky to have a market for my honey right where my bees are. I keep them on Potteric Carr nature reserve, and the reserve has a shop that buys a lot of my honey to sell to visitors.
