“...a contemporary love story and road movie that combines the yearning of Kerouac with the immediacy of today’s go-go technology.” Ronald Foley MacDonald – Film Curator, Dalhousie.
Based on the novel Ditch by Hal Niedzviecki, Hard Drive is the story of Ditch (played by Douglas Smith in Big Love) a lonely gawky boy still living with his mother, and Debs (played by Laura Slade Wiggins in Shameless) a beautiful American runaway.
When Ditch falls head over heels for Debs, she starts to unravel. Wanting to help, Ditch drives her back to her home in the US where they confront her disturbing past.
Infused with a pulsing indie music track, Hard Drive, is a character fuelled psychological love story about growing up, reclaiming the past and rethinking the future.
The film also stars Canadian superstar Megan Follows (Anne of Green Gables), and legendary American drummer Jerry Granelli (A Charlie Brown Christmas), who also created the score.
Writer and director, William D. MacGillivray, has written and directed several dramatic features and documentaries including the celebrated The Man of a Thousand Songs (TIFF 2010) as well as the critically acclaimed CBC network television series Gullage’s and Life Classes, named a ‘Masterwork of Canadian Cinema’ by Canada’s AV Trust and nominated for Best Motion Picture at the 1988 Genie Awards, as well was Canada’s official entry in Competition at the 1988 Berlin Film Festival. In 2013, MacGillivray was awarded the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, in recognition of distinguished career achievements.
Hard Drive was produced with the participation of TELEFILM CANADA and FILM NOVA SCOTIA with the assistance of the NOVA SCOTIA FILM INDUSTRY TAX CREDIT and the CANADIAN FILM OR VIDEO PRODUCTION TAX CREDIT PROGRAM and developed with the assistance of ASTRAL MEDIA THE HAROLD GREENBERG FUND.
