Each year a group of speedster aficionados gets together to rally over a more than 100-mile course for glory, for beauty, and for the love of the road. This year's race was hosted by last year's winner Doug Shepherd. Skagit and Whatcom counties made for a beautiful backdrop Saturday, Aug. 9 for the rally. A noteworthy thing about rallies: though we were each handed a map and had to navigate our ways through the course, this is no race. The rules are clear: no speeding, and there are 15 minutes of stoppage time for potty breaks and pictures. Well, Kyle and I learned that as exciting as it was to fight to stay in the front of the pack and although we finished first, we came in near last place! Double points against you for every minute you arrive early! (The time you're shooting for is based on the time it took the race designer to run it, and you don't know what that was.)
