Eryn Foster organized a week long residency for seven artists on Pictou Island in July 2014. Pictou Island Portage residency was invitation to walk, think and create while traversing the 9.5 kilometer long island on a daily basis.
I began the project by drawing a line each day from one end to the other with chalk placed at the end of a large piece of driftwood I found. The process was arduos. A walk to the end of the island would take approximately four hours. The mark made disappeared quickly. It made me think about time and effort in an entirely different way. I began to cherish my resting places as a break from the effort, as a time to be unproductive, sit and rest. I decided to mark the resting places with larger chalk circles. The mark of the journey disappeared and the mark of the resting spot remained
