Description: 1. According to the New York Times, the National Security Agency has implanted software in nearly 100,000 computers around the world that allows the United States to conduct surveillance on those machines and can also create a digital highway for launching cyberattacks. While most of the software is inserted by gaining access to computer networks, the N.S.A. has increasingly made use of a secret technology that enables it to enter and alter data in computers even if they are not connected to the Internet. The N.S.A. calls its efforts more an act of “active defense” against foreign cyberattacks than a tool to go on the offensive.
2. According to Israel Today, Hamas Interior Minister Fathi Hamad marked the anniversary of the December 2008-January 2009 "Gaza War" with Israel by telling Palestinians that they would fully liberate the entirety of "Palestine" within eight years. According to Hamad, Islamic prophecies foretell that Israel will be replaced with a Palestinian state. He explained that this goal, the destruction of the Jewish state, "will take eight years."
3. According to Reuters, NATO's deputy secretary-general said on Wednesday that Turkey has accepted assurances that a planned NATO missile defense system in which it is playing a part is not designed to protect Israel as well. Alexander Vershbow said objections by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government had resulted in part from confusion about a Turkish-hosted NATO radar. Addressing an Israeli security forum, Vershbow said there had been "a lot of confusion" in Turkey, including over the similarity between its NATO radar and a U.S. radar posted in Israel to help it spot any ballistic missile launches by Iran.
4. According to The Diplomat, China's foreign minister says the country is ready to join the Middle East Quartet to help negotiate a peace agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians. At the tail end of a trip to the Arab world last week, Foreign Minister Wang Yi gave an interview to Al Jazeera, in which he spoke at great length about China’s desire to play a greater role in the Middle East, including in the Israeli-Palestinian peace agreements. In response to a question about China’s interest in the Middle East Quartet, Wang said, “we are ready to join it if the Quartet so wishes” but stressed that if it didn’t join it, “China will continue to work in its own way to move the peace process forward.”
5. According to LiveScience, the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists announced on Tuesday that the iconic Doomsday Clock remains poised at five minutes until midnight. The clock is no doomsday device rather, it's a visual metaphor for the danger of a "civilization-threatening technological catastrophe." Every year, the board analyzes international threats, particularly nuclear arsenals and climate change, and decides where the minute hand on the Doomsday Clock should rest. The closer it is to midnight, the closer the world is to doom.
Jesus Christ said in Luke 21:25-28: "And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh."
Our Second Coming quote for today is from G. Campbell Morgan who said, "I never begin my work in the morning without thinking that perhaps he may interrupt my work and begin his own. I am not looking for death, I am looking for him."
