The Lord be with you.
And with your spirit.
Proclamation of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew.
Glory to you O Lord.
At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon and behold a Canaanite woman of that district came out and called out, “Have pity on me Lord, Son of david! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus' disciples came and asked him, “Send her away for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage saying, “Lord help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said “Please Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman's daughter was healed from that hour.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
Isn't the world just full of dogs? You know what I mean, there are all kinds of dogs. There are times when we look around and we know that so and so is just too much of a dog, and we don't want to have anything to do with him or her. We honestly think that we are better than some people. We even think about it every now and then, that some people are better than others, some races better than others. And this is the nature of prejudice. It abounds today, it may seem to be undercover, but it abounds and it did in the time of Jesus as well. Certain people were better than others only because of the fact that they were of a different race. When will we begin to see, that our differences, and there are differences, but not that they make us better or worse, but they help the other to become better by the experience of God in their lives alive and active in the other. Jesus took time to talk to the woman, who was so different from him, yet she reminded him of the fact that we are all God's children. He exclaimed to her that her faith was great and that it would save her. The time has come to lay down our differences and to recognize that we are all children of the same God. And that our differences help others to grow stronger in faith and in love. If you look around, you will see people of many different cultures, all valued in the eyes of God, so it may seem different, but all valuable in the eyes of God. May we take advantage of this fact, and learn that God is trying to tell us something. We can all be better if only we learn from one another.
